Sporophores tricholomatoïdes, coriaces, écailleux, solitaires ou subfasciculés. Chapeau 4-10 cm diam., convexe à marge enroulée puis s'étalant, au centre aplati, charnu, radialement fibrilleux à écailleux, sec, brun grisâtre à brun foncé, spécialement à la marge avec des restes de voile écailleux, beige à blanc grisâtre. Hyménophore à lamelles émarginées, étroitement adnées à presque libres, serrées à très serrées. Pied 3-7 x 0,8-1,5 cm, cylindrique, souvent tordu, partie supérieure fibrilleuse, fibrilleux-floconneux ailleurs, parfois à zone annulaire duveteuse. Chair assez ferme surtout dans le pied, blanche. Odeur agréable. Goût légèrement épicé rappelant l'oignon, s'accentuant après séchage. Sporée blanche. Spores 5-6,5 x 2,5-3 µm, étroitement ellipsoïdes, lisses, hyalines. Basides 4-spores. Cheilocystides absentes ou peu différenciées. Pleurocystides absentes. Système d'hyphes monomitique. Anses d'anastomose présentes.
Espèces saprotrophes sur bois, principalement sur des troncs encore debout. Lentinula edodes est une espèce comestible cultivée à grande échelle et mieux connue sous le nom de shiitake.
Sporophores tricholomatoid, tough, scaly, solitary or subfasciculate. Cap 4-10 cm diam., convex with a rolled margin then spreading out, flattened centre, fleshy, radially fibrous to scaly, dry, greyish-brown to dark brown, especially at the margin with remains of scaly veil, beige to greyish-white. Hymenophore with emarginate lamellae, closely to almost free, tight to very tight. Stipe 3-7 x 0.8-1.5 cm, cylindrical, often twisted, upper part fibrous, fibrillous-flaky elsewhere, sometimes with downy ring zone. Flesh fairly firm, especially in the stipe, white. Smell pleasant. Taste slightly spicy, reminiscent of onion, becoming more pronounced after drying. Spore print white. Spores 5-6.5 x 2.5-3 µm, narrowly ellipsoid, smooth, hyaline. Basidia 4-spores. Cheilocystidia absent or poorly differentiated. Pleurocystidia absent. Hyphae monomitic. Clamp connections present.
Saprotrophic species on wood, mainly on standing trunks. Lentinula edodes is a widely cultivated edible species better known as shiitake.
